BANYAN EXTENDS VINES SUPPORT TO NEW IBM PS/2 SCSI SYSTEMS
WESTBORO, Mass., June 18, 1990 -- Banyan Systems today reemphasized
its commitment to industry standards by announcing VINES support
for the new Intel 386TM-based IBMR Personal System/2 platforms with
integral SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) adaptors.
Supported systems include the three new IBM PS/2 Models 8565 (16
MHz, 386SX), 8580 (20MHz, 386), and 8580-A (25 MHz, 386 with cache)
. VINES support was previously available for IBM PS/2 platforms
which use ESDI and 3rd party SCSI devices.
"The ability to run VINES, Version 4.0 ... and all VINES certified
applications... on the new PS/2 platforms enables Banyan customers
to take full advantage of the high performance and ease of
expansion of the SCSI architecture, especially when running disk-
intensive applications on their network," explained Banyan Vice
President James Allchin. "The fast disk access and large disk
capacity of the new platforms, coupled with the networking ability
and virtual management capabilities of VINES, yield a powerful
turn-key networking solution of great appeal to users of Banyan's
corporate-wide PC networks."

BANYAN VINES SUPPORTS IBM PS/2 SCSI SYSTEMS/ June 18 / Page 2
VINES, Version 4.0, supports SCSI peripherals which adhere to the
Common Command Set, approved by the American National Standards
Institute. IBM's design of the SCSI fixed disk includes a 3 1/2",
320 MB drive with a 12.5 ms data access time... the fastest in the
industry. Banyan itself adopted the SCSI architecture in its CNS
and earlier BNS network server platforms.
As of June 25, VINES Support for IBM PS/2 SCSI Systems will be
included -- at no extra charge-- on three new release diskettes
being furnished with the 3 1/2" media version of VINES 4.0.
Customers will be able to load VINES on either ESDI- or SCSI-based
PS/2 platforms. Also available from Banyan, in the same time frame,
for use with the new IBM PS/2 systems is the Model EXT415 150 MB
External Tape Backup Drive with SCSI cable, which has a U.S. list
price of $2,295.
